April 28, 2025
Monday night we responded to the School Committee’s counter proposals from our last session, as well as provided updated salary proposals for units A, B, C, and D. The School Committee provided us with a list of 67 of our proposals that they are rejecting outright (Unit A, Unit B, Unit C, Unit D), and a proposal for an additional 124.5 hours each school year (the equivalent of an additional 16.6 work days at the Committee’s new proposed length of 7.5 hours each day.) The Committee has offered no compensation for this additional time, and no updated salary proposal. As a reminder, one third of Unit A (over 100 members) would actually be making less (thousands of dollars less, in some cases) under the Committee’s initial Unit A salary proposal than they would if we simply continued operating under our current salary scale with no increase.
For comparison, in our region Cambridge, Medford, and Winchester have all added time to their work day in recent years, and all have received compensation of approximately 0.2% in additional salary for each hour added. By this standard, the cost of the Belmont School Committee’s proposals would be an additional 23.7% in salary for all unit members. We await the School Committee’s salary proposal at our next bargaining session on Monday, May 5. Please join us as a silent representative.
